Rational Unified Process (RUP) is a comprehensive software development process framework created by Rational Software. It provides structured guidance for building high-quality software through an iterative, incremental approach that emphasizes risk management, continuous feedback, and early validation of architecture and requirements. RUP is use case–driven and architecture-centric, helping teams align functionality with stakeholder needs while shaping a robust, executable architecture from the outset.

RUP organizes work into four lifecycle phases—Inception, Elaboration, Construction, and Transition—each with clear objectives and milestones. It defines roles, activities, and artifacts across core disciplines such as Business Modeling, Requirements, Analysis and Design, Implementation, Testing, Deployment, Project Management, Configuration and Change Management, and Environment. The framework is highly configurable, allowing organizations to tailor its practices, templates, and workflows to their domain, team size, and regulatory context.

Often supported by the Rational toolset (for example, requirements, modeling, configuration, and change management tools), RUP promotes best practices including iterative development, continuous integration, managed requirements, component-based architecture, and quality verification throughout the lifecycle. Initially developed and commercialized by Rational Software in the late 1990s and later advanced under IBM Rational after acquisition, RUP remains a foundational reference for disciplined, scalable software engineering processes.

Rational Unified Process is developed by Rational Software. The most popular versions of this product among our users are: 2003.0 and 2003.6.
